JOHN Bateup was on top form during Round 4 of the ClassicMXRider.com Pre-68 Championship at Marks Tey on Sunday. The Crawley Down-based rider took two wins having been denied a potential first win by Chris Collins in Round 3 at Stebbing.
It wasn’t an easy feat by any means, as he had Gene Womack (510 Jawa Metisse) and Aaron Graves (350 BSA) keeping him honest throughout the three championship races.
Race one saw Bateup (500 Triumph), Womack and Graves all in contention for the holshot, but it was Bateup who took the lead. By lap two though, Womack had taken the lead with Graves in third followed by Sam Heitman (500 BSA) and series leader Nick Archer (500 BSA) in fourth and fifth respectively.
Despite giving away 150cc to Bateup and Womack’s machines, Graves may as well have been riding a 500 as he … Read More »
ON Bank Holiday Monday, the picturesque Essex-based village of Stebbing played host to Round 3 of the ClassicMXRider.com Pre-68 Championship.
Many riders had already raced at the Mortimer Classic MCC’s classic scramble the day before, but the thought of racing on two consecutive days did little to deter some riders from making the overnight trip from Bennetts Hill to Stebbing.
With five separate riders already putting their names to at least one race win each, it was going to be a close fought affair, and with scrambles regular Chris Collins, along with Sam Heitman, still waiting to take their first wins of the season, the line-up was looking as close as ever.
In Race 1, Collins (500 BSA) was quick of the line and took the holshot ahead of Paul Grudgington (500 BSA). Series leader Nick Archer (500 BSA) settled into fourth behind … Read More »

Nick Archer strapped on our GoPro to take some footage of race 3 of Round 2 of the Pre-68 Championship at Maylandsea on 21 April 2013.
Nick had already finished third and second in the first two races. In this race he finished fifth and then won the next race to end up the highest points scorer of the day.
The bike Nick rides was a new setup for the Dave Roper Memorial Motocross event, which he rode at the weekend before. The bike is essentially a 1967 BSA B44 Victor that has been bored and stroked from it original 441cc to 500cc. The frame is a Terry Weedy (Avery Products) item, whilst the engine has been prep’d by fellow scrambles competitor Bob Rolf and also Hosplant based in Colchester, Essex. Rear shocks are from Reiger Suspension.
We wish Nick all the best of … Read More »
